Players and officials of Rivers United escaped serious harm after the club’s team bus was involved in a road accident on Thursday while en route to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United.

The incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed its training base, according to a statement issued by the club’s Media Officer, Charles Mayuku.

Rivers United confirmed that while some players and officials sustained minor injuries, there were no fatalities or life-threatening cases.

“The club can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement read.

The club added that its medical team is closely monitoring those affected, while management continues to assess the situation and review travel arrangements ahead of the Federation Cup fixture.

“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority,” the club stated.

Rivers United also expressed gratitude to supporters, partners and members of the football community for their concern and prayers following the incident.

The accident comes at a crucial stage of the season for the Port Harcourt-based side, who are still in contention for silverware after narrowly missing out on the Nigeria Premier Football League title.

Coached by Finidi George, Rivers United finished second in the NPFL standings, just one point behind champions Rangers International after an enthralling title race that went down to the final day.

However, the Pride of Rivers remain in the hunt for a trophy through the President Federation Cup. In the Round of 32, they defeated Rangers 3-2 in a dramatic encounter to secure a place in the last 16 and gain revenge for their league title disappointment.

Rivers United are scheduled to face Nasarawa United in the Round of 16 at the Awka City Stadium on Saturday, with the club hopeful that all affected players and officials will recover quickly from the incident.
